$18,000 Grant to Support NICU Families

An $18,000 grant to Today is a Good Day, a nonprofit dedicated to providing personal and financial support for families who experience the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), is changing the lives of families in the Greater Philadelphia area. The additional funding was made possible by the Crozer-Chester Medical Center Medical Staff Fund and the Delaware County Memorial Hospital Medical Staff Fund of The Foundation for Delaware County.

Families admitted to the NICU with a premature or sick baby are overwhelmed with emotions, paperwork, and difficult decisions. Today is a Good Day provides families with tangible and meaningful items as they navigate their NICU journey. Through the generosity of The Foundation for Delaware County, the nonprofit can continue carrying out its mission to support NICU families when they need it most.

“Our program makes sure that families who are navigating the NICU, know that they are not alone, and gives them the opportunity to connect with other families who have also experienced the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.”

Martha Sharkey, Founder and CEO of Today is a Good Day

The partnership offers families in the NICU a monthly support group, transportation (including SETPA passes or reimbursement for Uber rides), car seats, breastfeeding support, holiday meals, care packages that include baby supplies and books for children, and much more.

About Today is a Good Day

Inspired by their journey in Abington Hospital’s NICU, Martha and Paul Sharkey founded the organization in honor of their daughter, Claire Josephine, and in memory of her identical twin sister, Mary Gladys.

The organization currently partners with eight hospitals in and around the Greater Philadelphia area. As they’ve grown, they have provided over 2,700 care packages for families through hospital partnerships and have expanded their volunteer base from 12 to over 500 volunteers.

“We are thrilled to continue our support and partnership with Today is a Good Day. Over the past five years, the medical staff has seen first-hand how critical this additional support system is for our NICU families in what is an already intense time of their life,” said Dr. Cynthia Dembofsky, Neonatology Division Chief, Prospect CHMG.
