HMO vs PPO with Independence Blue Cross

The Importance of Understanding Health Care Literacy

Healthcare and insurance policies can be broad and overwhelming, but important to understand as an employee. As an employer, it is important to help employees who may not understand the varying aspects involved with health insurance.

According to a survey conducted by EBN’s parent company Arizent, only 31% of employers were able to score higher than 70% when asked about their understanding of insurance language. Terms they struggled to define included “co-insurance” and “preferred provider organizations”, or PPO.

The understanding of such terms also affected the likelihood of employees to utilize healthcare. An overwhelming majority of employers who scored 90% or above on their healthcare literacy assessment were more likely to see their PCP and pay lower costs than those who did not see their PCP.

To help educate employees on understanding healthcare and insurance language, employers can:

  • Focus on healthcare literacy year round;
  • Offer materials such as webinars, articles, and guides; and
  • Provide monthly wellness themes to send out information regarding specific topics each week.
