The Importance of Preventive Health

While most people visit their doctor to address existing health problems, preventive health offers routine care to maintain health and prevent issues from occurring. Preventive care varies for each individual, but it can involve screenings, counseling, check-ups, and vaccines.

It’s important to note that most health plans will cover the full cost of preventive health services with no copays. Attending an in-person, preventive appointment may feel like a waste of time when no known medical issue exists; however, it can prevent a costly and time-consuming chronic condition from developing.

Examples of preventive care for adults

Most of the following types of care are available to insured adults within certain age ranges or risk groups:

  • Alcohol misuse screening and counseling,
  • Blood pressure screening,
  • Cholesterol screening,
  • Colorectal cancer screening,
  • Depression screening,
  • Diabetes screening,
  • Diet counseling,
  • Tobacco use screening, and
  • Select vaccinations (hepatitis A and B, HPV, influenza, measles, mumps, and more).

Examples of preventive care for women

Additional services are offered to women in non-grandfathered health plans, including:

  • Breast cancer screening and counseling,
  • Breastfeeding support and counseling,
  • Cervical cancer screening,
  • Contraception counseling,
  • Domestic violence screening and counseling,
  • Folic acid supplements,
  • Gestational diabetes screening,
  • And osteoporosis screening.

Examples of preventive care for children

No-cost preventative services for children are offered through most health plans if delivered by an in-network provider. These services can include:

  • Autism screening,
  • Behavioral assessments,
  • Developmental screening,
  • Hearing and vision screenings,
  • Obesity screening and counseling,
  • And select vaccinations (tetanus, hepatitis A and B, polio, flu, measles, mumps, and more).

Being proactive and obtaining preventive care each year is the best way to stay healthy and keep your healthcare costs lower. Be sure to talk to your doctor about which services are available and right for you.
